More and more of my predictions for 2023 are coming true. And some from my long list (which you got if you messaged me) also happened already.
Thing 1 - GPT-4
As foreseen in the previous issue, GPT-4 was announced!
What's the big deal?
GPT-4 is the latest and greatest from OpenAI and it
- can generate 25 000 words - that's the length of a 100-page book!
ChatGPT can do "only" 3000 - passes a bunch of universal tests in a very high percentile, including
- Uniform Bar Exam 90th percentile while ChatGPT was 10th percentile
- Biology Olympiad 99th percentile while ChatGPT was 31st percentile - understands images and can express logical ideas about them
GPT-4 needs "adult supervision" and still has some problems that all large language models (LLMs) suffer from. Does it matter? It's aiming to amplify what every person is able to do.
But at what point do we realize that things that used to take a team of people, one AI-enabled super-employee can do? It's true now, tho.
OpenAI finished training GPT-4 in August 2022. 6 months ago!
So what the heck have they been doing since??
They've been adding guardrails for adversarial usage, unwanted content, and privacy concerns (something I touched on in 4th reason to be scared)
GPT-4 is 82% less likely to respond to requests for disallowed content and 40% more likely to produce factual responses than GPT-3.5 on our internal evaluations.
They mention great potential for teaching various subjects - for example giving a 5th grader a math tutor with unlimited time and patience (2nd reason to be excited in my video) - personalized to their skill level.
Real-world examples of GPT-4 enabled AI tutors:
GPT-4 surpasses ChatGPT in advanced reasoning capabilities.
GPT-4 can solve difficult problems with greater accuracy, thanks to its broader general knowledge and problem-solving abilities.
If you're not a tech person, you may think this applies to you less.
And you couldn't be more wrong.
Tech people might get access first, just because they are more in touch with development and eager to get their hands on cutting-edge tech.
But you'll benefit more. Techies can already do "magic" with computers. Now you'll be able to do it too.
You'll need to express yourself well, though.
Which requires clarity of thinking and understanding of the problem. Coding skills help.
Thing 2 - Midjourney v5
Midjourney is an independent research lab exploring new mediums of thought and expanding the imaginative powers of the human species.
Midjourney v4 already produced amazing art. With the new version, you can produce photograph-level results.
Magic happens when you combine GPT-4 with Midjourney v5. I haven't tried it yet but when I do, this will help:

Thing 3 - What matters in the long run
Intelligence is also about not wasting your time worrying about things that won’t matter in the long run.
